Lukla Airport: Flights, Delays and the Helicopter Alternative
28 October 2026
How flights to Lukla's Tenzing-Hillary Airport work, why they are delayed, when they leave from Ramechhap, and when a helicopter is the calmer way into the Everest region.
Almost every journey into the Everest region begins with the same short flight: a small plane, a steep mountain valley and a runway that ends at a wall of rock. Lukla's airport is the gateway to Namche Bazaar, Hotel Everest View and Everest Base Camp, and it is also the part of the trip that most often changes plans. This guide explains how the flights work, why they are delayed, what happens in the busy seasons, and when a helicopter is the calmer choice.
Tenzing-Hillary Airport at a glance
- Official name: Tenzing-Hillary Airport, renamed in January 2008 in honour of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary.
- Elevation: about 2,845 m.
- Runway: a single strip of 527 m by 30 m, with a slope of 11.7%. Planes land uphill and take off downhill.
- History: built in 1964 under Hillary's supervision on land he bought from local Sherpas. The runway was not paved until 2001.
- Airlines: small domestic carriers such as Tara Air, Summit Air and Sita Air fly the route with light twin-engine planes.
The short, sloping runway is the reason for the airport's reputation. Nepal's aviation authority requires pilots to have substantial short-runway experience in Nepal, and ten landings at Lukla with an instructor, before they fly there on their own. The flights are run by crews who do this every day, but there is no room for poor visibility, and that shapes everything else about the trip.
How the flights work
Flights to Lukla run in daylight only and only in good weather. Pilots fly by sight, so cloud over the valley or at the airstrip stops them. Most flights leave in the early morning, because the air is usually calmest then and the winds in the Lukla valley tend to strengthen later in the day.
- From Kathmandu: the flight takes about 35 minutes.
- From Ramechhap (Manthali): the flight takes about 20 minutes.
- Baggage: the usual limit is about 15 kg per person in total, typically 10 kg in the hold and 5 kg in the cabin. Extra weight is charged per kilo.
The planes are small, so pack soft bags and keep valuables, medicines and a warm layer in your hand luggage. Porters and lodges in the Khumbu can store or carry the rest.
Kathmandu or Ramechhap?
In recent busy seasons, most Lukla flights have left not from Kathmandu but from Ramechhap Airport in Manthali, a small town east of the capital. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal moved the flights there in 2019, during runway work in Kathmandu, and has done so again in later seasons to ease pressure on Tribhuvan International Airport, where international traffic takes priority.
For travellers this matters a great deal. Reaching Manthali in time for a dawn flight means a road journey of roughly four to six hours, usually starting in the middle of the night. If the weather then closes Lukla, you wait at Ramechhap rather than in your Kathmandu hotel.
Operators report that the shift usually covers the spring and autumn peaks, with direct flights from Kathmandu more common in the quieter months. The dates are confirmed season by season, so always check which airport your flight uses before you book anything else.
Why flights are delayed or cancelled
Delays at Lukla are normal, not exceptional. The main reasons are:
- Cloud at Lukla or along the route. Flights need clear sight of the valley. A morning that looks perfect in Kathmandu can be closed in the mountains.
- Wind later in the day. If the morning is lost, the afternoon rarely brings a second chance.
- The knock-on effect. When flights are cancelled for a day or two, the waiting passengers are added to the next clear morning, so it can take time for everyone to move.
The risk changes through the year. The clearest, most reliable months are usually October to November and March to May. The summer monsoon, from about June to August, brings the most cancellations, and winter mornings can also be hazy or cloudy. Our guide to when to visit Nepal explains the seasons in more detail.
Planning around the weather
A few simple habits remove most of the stress.
- Leave spare days. Keep at least two spare days between your return from Lukla and your international flight home, and more in the monsoon or winter.
- Fly early. Ask for the first flights of the morning in both directions. They are the most likely to go.
- Stay flexible at the start. A delay on the way in usually means shuffling one night on the trail. A delay on the way out is harder, which is why the spare days matter.
- Check your insurance. Make sure your policy covers trekking at the altitudes you plan to reach and helicopter evacuation, and read what it says about missed connections.
- Keep some cash. Extra nights, meals or a last-minute seat cost money, and card payments are not always possible in the mountains.
The helicopter alternative
Helicopters do not escape the mountain weather. Cloud and wind affect them too. What a private helicopter changes is everything around the weather.
- It leaves from Kathmandu. In seasons when the planes fly from Ramechhap, a helicopter from Kathmandu removes the night drive entirely.
- It waits for you. A private charter is not tied to a fixed timetable or a queue of passengers from earlier cancelled flights. If a gap in the cloud opens, it can go.
- It goes beyond Lukla. A helicopter can bring you home from higher up the valley, such as Hotel Everest View above Namche or Gorak Shep near Base Camp, saving several days of walking back down the same trail.
- It suits short trips. For travellers with limited time, it turns a long journey into a morning.
This is why our Everest trips are built around helicopter flights. The Luxury Everest View Trek flies you to Lukla, walks to Namche Bazaar and returns by helicopter from Hotel Everest View in four days. The Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek uses a helicopter to Lukla and another from Gorak Shep back to Kathmandu. If you would rather not trek at all, the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour flies up the Khumbu valley and stops for breakfast at Hotel Everest View, and you can compare all our flights on the Everest helicopter tours page.
A helicopter costs much more than a plane seat, and it is not always necessary. On a long trek with plenty of spare days, a scheduled flight in good season works well for many people. The helicopter makes most sense when time is short, when you want to avoid the Ramechhap drive, or when you would rather not walk back down the way you came.
On arrival in Lukla
Lukla is a busy little town of lodges, cafés and gear shops strung along the trail. Most trekkers meet their porters here and walk the same day to Phakding, a gentle few hours down the Dudh Kosi valley, before climbing towards Namche Bazaar. Arriving in Lukla, at around 2,860 m, is a big change from Kathmandu, so walk slowly, drink plenty of water and let the first day be easy.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla?
About 35 minutes from Kathmandu, or about 20 minutes when flights leave from Ramechhap (Manthali). The time you should plan for is the waiting, not the flying.
Are Lukla flights leaving from Ramechhap this season?
In recent spring and autumn peaks most Lukla flights have left from Ramechhap. The arrangement is confirmed each season, so check with your airline or trip organiser for your exact dates before booking hotels and onward flights.
How much luggage can I take to Lukla?
Usually about 15 kg per person in total: around 10 kg in the hold and 5 kg in the cabin. Extra weight is charged per kilo.
How many spare days should I leave?
At least two between your return from Lukla and your flight home, and more in the monsoon or winter, when cancellations are more frequent.
Is a helicopter worth it?
It is worth it if your time is short, if you want to avoid the overnight drive to Ramechhap, or if you would like to return from higher up the valley. It does not remove weather delays, but it gives you far more flexibility around them. Contact us and we can suggest the best option for your dates.
