Overview

Chitwan rewrote the story of Asian conservation: the one-horned rhinoceros was saved here, and the park is now one of the best places in Asia to see it in the wild.

Your days move to the jungle’s rhythm: mist-wrapped canoe drifts at dawn, jeep safaris deep into the sal forest, walks with naturalists who read the ground like a newspaper.

Evenings return you to the lodge’s riverside ease — open-air dining, wildlife talks by lamplight, and the distant sawing call of a leopard as you fall asleep.

Highlights

  • One-horned rhinoceros on near-certain sightings
  • Tiger tracking with veteran naturalists
  • Dawn canoe drift past basking gharials
  • Tharu village evening and cultural dance
  • Riverside luxury at Meghauli Serai, a Taj Safari lodge, on the Luxury level

Questions, answered

Will we see a tiger?

Chitwan’s tigers are wild and unhabituated, which is exactly as it should be. Sightings reward patience — roughly one safari in four — while rhino, deer, crocodile and rich birdlife are seen on almost every outing.

Is the safari safe on foot?

Jungle walks follow the national park’s safety rules and always go with two experienced naturalists. It remains the most thrilling way to understand the forest.

Are there elephant rides?

No. We do not include elephant rides. A private, observation-only elephant-conservation visit with a naturalist can be added on request.
